The tables and products are made from a new generation of fiber reinforced concrete called GFRC.
Benefits of glass fiber reinforced concrete (GFRC) include:
- Endless design applications: Able to be poured in thin layers, allowing for just about any shape or color desired.
- Lighter-weight: A fraction of the weight of traditional concrete. Internally reinforced by the fibers in the mix so additional reinforcement is not needed.
- Durability: In addition to looking great, a properly prepared piece of concrete furniture requires very little care, and will last a long time. In tests, our tables supported several times the weight they would ever encounter through typical use.
- Environment: Being able to use less material to do more, means fewer resources are required for each application. Most GFRC formulas make use of recycled materials. Additionally, SVLT's designs are all made locally in Colorado, further reducing the environmental costs that can be associated with outsourcing.
SVLT's products utilize a white cement base which provides an integral white color. No staining, bleaching or painting is used to provide the color. Each table receives a coat of a soy-based impregnating stain sealer and 2 coats of wax surface. The smooth surface and hand waxed finish on the wear surface provide a silky smooth touch befitting heirloom quality furniture.
The horizontal surfaces of the Aiode table are hole free and have a highly refined surface, On the sides and back of the table, small holes of varying size will be present, which is typical of concrete. These are unique from table to table, and we consider them part of the inherent beauty of concrete.
Overall, the tables support plenty of weight for their intended purpose. However, like most pieces of furniture, they do not handle impact as well. Dropping your table, or using it for other than its intended purpose, is not recommended.
Concrete is by nature porous and can stain. SVLT's concrete blend includes densifying additives and the wear surfaces are treated with a soy-based green sealant and 2 coats of furniture wax. This will keep the tables stain free from wine and coffee stains when the spills are wiped off within a reasonable time. However, as with any table, staining can occur if the offender is allowed to sit. To prevent this coasters are recommended. Periodically applying a new coat of wax will maintain the stain resistance.
Will the tables scratch my floor?
The tables have felt "feet" at the base, which will prevent scratches, and help position to move the tables. The coasters and tablet cradle have a cork backing to prevent scratching.
How do I care for concrete?
Day to day, dusting with a dry cloth will suffice, or wiping with a damp, soft sponge. The wear surface is coated in wax, so any minor scratches can usually be buffed out similar to wood furniture. Every year or two, a new coat of furniture wax may be applied.
If not waxed, the table will slowly develop a patina and the brightness will be subdued, but the concrete will not be harmed. Some prefer the aged look.
Avoid the use of citrus-based cleaners, as they can strip the wax. When using a cleaning agent, always test in a small area first.
